Picking up Fantasy

Well... The other boys have finally done it. After some hard convincing and a game with Spicerack (I got completely obliterated...) I've finally been convinced to pick up some fantasy.

But it seems it isn't that simple for me... Being a competitive 40k player, and striving to be a competitive Hobbit player I often don't have much variation in my lists. Heck, the most I've changed something in my 40k list recently is adding tau allies! So I want something really different - something that I don't think will get boring quickly and most importantly, something that I will enjoy painting.

I've narrowed it down to two armies that really stick out to me: Ogre Kingdoms and Lizardmen, and at the moment I'm more leaning towards Ogre Kingdoms. Some of their magic items seem really cool and I like the look of their Magic Spells. They would also be pretty easy to paint but I think the results would end up quite nice.

The boys have gotten sick of me hounding them with questions so I'll turn it over to you: what do you guys think of Ogres? Are there any common builds?

Have any of you recently made the move to fantasy? What army do you play? Post your list or some comments down below :)

Alles gute,
TommyH

    1. Haha I know exactly what you mean mate - the only thing I can do is constantly question my mates until I get some actual units. Tomb Kings I hear have some pretty awesome shooting ability but there's just something about giant lizards that tickles everyone's fancy isn't there!

  2. I've just started Fantasy.

I've gone with the Empire as I feel like they have the most variety in builds that will stop my wandering eye for other Armies!

I've picked up Sigmar's Blood and that will be the starting point I'm 20 State Troops down. 10 to go and I'll be ready for the first game of my campaign....

    1. They also have some pretty fancy uniforms! The only reason I didn't play Empire or Bretonnia is simply because they are human, and due to me playing Space Marines and Easterlings in 40k and Lotr (respectively). I wish you well with your fantasy mate!

  3. I personally love warhammer fantasy and the movement phase is so much more important in my opinion so watch out for that I don't play ogres empire and beastmen are my armies but ive seen a few people play them and from what ive seen a common build is irongut horde with characters using magic buffs and sabercats as cheap distractions hope u enjoy fantasy

    1. Iron Guts look pretty nasty - in bigger games I've been thinking of having a solid caster and quite a number of Iron Guts, with the sabres/mournfangs and the cannons in support. Thanks for the best wishes!

    1. Mate we would be more than happy to provide some more fantasy content - we have 3 serious fantasy players here at the blog (I'm sure you've seen some high elf and tomb kings WIP photos floating around) so I'll be sure to put up some photos and battle reports when I get into the swing of things too.

Don't forget that if you feel like writing an article/voicing your opinion you can send it into us!

    2. I might have to take you up on that. I've fancied trying my hand at blogging for a while....

There's a fairly recent series on BOLS about getting into Fantasy. I'll have to reread that to check I've something new to say!

  5. Huh. Just noticed that Lizardmen Temple Guard are gone from GW website. Weird huh?

I don't know enough WFB to know if anything else is missing.
