BOLS discussion on 9th ed Fantasy.

An interesting talk going on over on the BOLS forums about possible changes to 9th edition fantasy. I'm not going to go into the rumours. However, what I do want to do is talk about something that BigRed replied with.

This is not a rumour. This is a discussion.

It could be interesting to see the opposite of the horde rules, where you might have
"small units" - some type of movement/maneuver benefits
"normal units" - standard rules
"giant units" - horde benefits

Then you could introduce new army and play philosophies that don't punish folks with smaller easier to collect and paint units.

----

This is a really cool idea. It could be said that bigger units already have problem moving around due to their wheel arcs and such, but it would be really nice to see characteristic changes depending on unit size.
For instance:
1-15: +1 Movement.
15-25: Nothing.
25+ -1 Movement.

Now that is at it's most basic format. Would it be game breaking? No. However, it would add an extra level of strategy into the game. Obviously I'm talking about infantry models here. No idea what would happen with cavalry.

If we take it one step further:

1-15:+1 Movement. Free wheeling with Musician.
15-25: Nothing.
25+: -1 Movement. +1 Ld.

It would mean bigger units fill out the "better morale with numbers" agenda, whilst also being subject to having to move around in a huge formation.

What do people think?

  1. I really like the idea of a free wheel for small units, it really seems stupid that a unit of five dudes on foot can't maneuver because they're trying to stay in formation, making them about as unwieldy as a unit of 90 guys that happen to be five wide....

  2. I'm with you on the movement, but I think adding leadership for bigger units would be extremely problematic unless you're considering replacing steadfast. I can see armies such as High Elves benefiting extremely (I could see a lot of HE infantry hordes; could you imagine them with the Crown of Command?!), whereas "bigger" models such as ogres would suffer unless you'd offer a special dispensation for monstrous infantry.

Nice to see some out-of-the-box thinking, though.

    1. Completely zoned out on steadfast lol. You're right, it wouldn't particularly work for leadership. Personally, I hate the random charge distance rolls. Maybe I'm just nostalgic about 6th ed.
