How supplement codices are made.

Ever wondered how GW decides which supplement to work on? Well, they responded to that question with this:

Via GW Digital Editions:

There are a lot of factors that go into deciding which supplement to do next.
The most important thing is, do we have a cool story to tell? Of course, Warhammer 40,000 has no shortage of those.

Other factors are what models will players need to represent the force in the supplement? If there are shiny new kits all the better (new Tau Empire models for Farsight, new wraith models for Iyanden).
It's very unlikely we'd ever do a supplement for an army that wasn't supported by a model range, so something like Eldar Exodites would be out of the question, but things like Space Marine Chapters, Chaos Legions, Eldar Craftworlds, Hive Fleets, Necron Dynasties, Guard Regiments, etc are all possible.

We have loads of ideas, and it's not so much a case of 'if' your army will get supplementised, but 'when'.

    1. Yeah, I wouldn't hold your breath for new jetbikes (or Jesbikes as I call them after their sculptor); because they already have a servicable model they are not a priority.

I discussed this with Jes Goodwin at the last GW HQ open day. In a nutshell what happens when a new codex is in the works is all the designs and test sculpts are considered for inclusion and the list has to be whittled down as GW only have the capacity to add a certain number of new products to their production lines at once. Jes said that the crunch-time was the new 'sportsbike' jetbike or the new Wraithguard/Blades to make it into production and it was a no-brainer to go with the updated model AND new units rather than just a new model.

No Jesbikes for a while :(

      Wraithblades though <3 :]
