How to airbrush a Frostheart Phoenix.

Doing this was incredibly easy, here is my simple step by step process of how to paint it:

What you will need:
An Airbrush.
White Undercoat.
Light Blue Paint.
White Paint.
Blue Wash/Ink.
Airbrush Thinner.
GW Dheneb Stone.
GW Ulthuan Grey.
GW Flash Gitz Yellow.
GW Reikland Fleshshade.

Alright, so here is a picture of what I used:

Step 1: Undercoat the entire model in white.

Step 2: Use the light blue over the entirety of the model.

Okay so the first two steps didn't get the pleasure of being photographed because they are very simple to do. Both of those steps took me under ten minutes, and most of that time was spent cleaning the airbrush between the two colours.

Step 3: Shade with White

Okay, so now we start to think about where we want the shading to be. Personally, I'm not a huge expert when it comes to "light sourcing" or anything like that. I shade where I think will look good. In this case, I chose the back of the primary wings, the back of the tail and the neck:

The reason why we are spraying it white is because once we apply the wash, it will create natural shading. I advice against using tape to stop overspray, but instead just practice a bit on a piece of paper in getting fine lines/control of your airbrush. A bit of overspray is good as it will create the "natural" effect of shading between the blue and white.

Step 4: Washing/Inking.

Find the biggest brush you have and a small tub to mix wash in. I used the Army Painted Blue Tone Ink in a 50/50 mix with Airbrush Thinner. Please remember to wear your airbrushing mask during this step as there are still a considerable amount of fumes. When making the mix, I quite literally just used a 1/4 of each bottle. Which roughly equates to 4ml from each. Then you just slosh it on using the brush. Try not to use big brush strokes, but rather small dabbing ones. You don't want brush marks to be left behind. Here is what it will look like:

Step 5: Drybrushing.

Okay, so your washing has dried (best to wait at least 1-2 hours depending on your climate). Grab your Ulthuan Grey and Drybrush the model. Remember that it is MUCH better to do multiple light layers of drybrushing rather then just one heavy one.

Now the majority of the bird is done!

Step 6: Painting the Details:

Grab your Dheneb Stone and go over the beak. Follow this up with a wash of Reikland Fleshshade and then re-highlight with Dheneb Stone. Wash the blue eyes (from the blue spray) with Reikland Fleshsahde (you can also just use a simple black wash) and then paint it yellow. This is to make sure there is a dark shade between the blue feathers and the yellow of the eyes. Finally, grab your Ulthuan Grey and paint the details between and around the eyes:

Step 7: Done.

It's that easy.

I wish you luck with the project. Drop any questions below.
